Good Morning Everyone,
We have just finished our first night at Colorado Springs KOA, our new home for the next month and probably through the end of August. Pierre, our cat. has settled down and is now out from under the recliner where he stayed while we traveled. I still don’t understand how he fits under that chair. We are completely hooked up and have even performed a small exploration of the town of Fountain located less than two miles from the campground.
The trip was uneventful. We left Mesa on Thursday morning and arrived at our campground at 5:30 last night. For those of you taking a motorhome, we stayed at a quality overnight campground in Albuquerque - High Desert RV Park. With the high rates of campgrounds these days, $19 for water and electric is terrific. They give a discount for AAA and Good Sam which lowered the rate to that price.
Whether you are traveling by car or RV, be alert that New Mexico is performing a lot of road work on its interstates. On I-25, we were held up for an hour over a span of six miles starting 23 miles south of Santa Fe. The delay was for bridgework.
Our KOA campground is located adjacent to I-25 and you can hear trains during the daytime although the tracks are not close. They provide free cable and wifi. You pay for the electricity during a monthly stay but not on a daily visit. Rate for the month is $625.83 plus electric which when you divide by 30 is reasonable. They have a large store here, heated swimming pool, hot tub, and a, café for weekend breakfast pancakes or biscuits and gravy. They serve BBQ, hot dogs, and burgers on weekend nights. We’ll be checking out their other recreational facilities.
The town of Fountain is small with a population of 15,000. Within 2 miles of the campground, we spotted a Chase Bank, Safeway grocery, Walgreens, and several restaurants ranging from BBQ to fast food. I noticed a Famous Sam in this area - perfect for inexpensive haircuts. There is also a vet in town for Pierre. About 3-1/2 miles away are the Super Wal Mart and Applebee’s. So now that we know where everything is, we definitely feel at home.
The weather is hot during the day but much cooler in the evenings than Mesa. We hit 85 degrees yesterday but it fell to 49 degrees during the night. We are up more than 6,000 feet high here so that accounts for the difference. It also means we are taking it easy for the next two days so that our lungs and hearts can say thank you.
Before leaving, I spent a solid week doing research on Colorado Springs and the surrounding areas up to 50 miles. There is a tremendous amount to do and see in this area and we look forward to covering much of it. We will be bringing you along if only on paper. So come away with us to Colorado for the next three months. Welcome aboard.
Fondly,
Nan
