This was written 33 years ago. I recently shared it with some friends who said to please post it. I think this is as good a guide today as it was then on how to have a long lasting marriage. I know it works because Earl and I will be celebrating our 48th anniversary this November.
Dear Mom and Dad,
I want to wish you a happy 50th anniversary. To say that you have been ideal parents would be an understatement and obviously only those who have special marriages can share fifty years together. You have set an example for those who are married and by examining yours, I have come up with a recipe which I have seen you use constantly and will try to apply towards mine. It is as follows:
3 cups of kindness overflowing
3 cups of generosity towards each other
Ample helping of humor thrown in - season to taste
1 quart of caring for each other in good times and bad
2 cups of tenderness (mix in well with caring)
3 cups of ample patience even during times of frustration with oneself or each other
3 cups of support for each other’s interests and work as well as sharing of interests wherever possible
Mix all ingredients together well.
Place in vessel lubricated carefully with open and honest communication
Put in the oven of one’s mind and let bake 50 years
Again, congratulations to you - my very special parents and thank you for your lessons on how to conduct a successful marriage.
With much love and deep affection,
Nan
